DRESS Risk with Valaciclovir and Aciclovir

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has issued an important reminder to healthcare professionals regarding the use of valaciclovir and aciclovir, emphasizing the risk of Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS). This rare but severe and potentially fatal drug reaction can present with symptoms such as fever, extensive skin rash or peeling, facial swelling, elevated eosinophil counts, and potential damage to organs, particularly the liver.

Valaciclovir and aciclovir are commonly prescribed for conditions like herpes simplex and herpes zoster. While effective for treating these viral infections, they come with a risk of DRESS, a serious adverse reaction that requires prompt recognition and intervention. SAHPRA advises that healthcare professionals inform patients about the symptoms of DRESS at the time of prescription. It’s crucial to monitor for any signs of skin reactions or other symptoms indicative of this condition. Early detection and management are key to preventing severe outcomes.

Patients using valaciclovir or aciclovir should be aware of these risks and report any unusual symptoms to their healthcare provider immediately. With careful monitoring and communication, the risks associated with these medications can be effectively managed.
