Beginning around the age of 40, most adults have difficulty with near vision, and many find the need to use reading glasses. In October 2021, the US FDA granted approval for the use of Allergan’s eye drop, Vuity (pilocarpine HCl ophthalmic solution) 1.25%, which could eliminate the need for reading glasses. The eye drop is applied to each eye once a day and starts working within 15 minutes, with each drop lasting for at least six hours. It is the first and only eye drop approved by the US FDA to treat presbyopia (age-related blurry near vision).
Vuity is a formulation of pilocarpine, a medication used to reduce pressure inside the eye and treat dry mouth. A cholinergic muscarinic receptor agonist, pilocarpine directly stimulates these receptors, causing smooth muscles like the iris sphincter muscle and ciliary muscle to contract. The approval was given based on the results of two randomized control trials on 750 subjects, which showed that Vuity started working within 15 minutes of application to improve near and intermediate vision without impacting distance vision. It has been found to be most effective in those between 40 and 55 years of age.
