The development of the COVID-19 vaccine is a worldwide effort involving some of the best biological and pharmaceutical companies. Not only is it an effort involving massive amounts of money, but also, a race among nations for prestige and achievement. As of date, the leading companies with their COVID-19 vaccine in the final stage of trials are:<\/p>\n

  1. China: Beijing Institute of Biotechnology (CanSino), Wuhan Institute of Biological Products, and Sinopharm<\/li>\n
  2. Russia: Gamaleya Research Institute (Sputnik V), EpiVacCorona, developed by Novosibirsk\u2019s Vektor [State Virology and Biotechnology Center)<\/li>\n
  3. USA: Moderna and Novavax<\/li>\n
  4. UK: University of Oxford and AstraZeneca<\/li>\n
  5. Germany: Pfizer and BioNTech<\/li>\n
  6. Brazil: Sinovac and Instituto Butantan<\/li>\n
  7. Belgium: Janssen Pharmaceutica<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    While the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines inject pieces of the coronavirus’ genetic code, the Oxford and Russian vaccines have genetically modified a harmless virus that infects chimpanzees.The China vaccines use the original virus in a disabled form. Once the trials have proved that the vaccines are safe, and that they either stop people getting sick or at least reduce the number who die, the next challenge is to manufacture them on a huge scale for the billions of potential doses needed all around the world. The final step will be to develop a logistical system to conduct mass immunizations. Experts say that 60-70% of the global population needs to be immune to the virus to ensure herd immunity.<\/p>\n

    Besides the above, there are currently 12 vaccines in phase 2 trials stage; 21 in small scale safety trials; and 154 in pre-trial stage.<\/p>\n
