Nepal in fact marks the westernmost edge of the Himalayan red panda’s entire global distribution. Their densest concentration is found in the Panchthar-Ilam-Taplejung, or PIT, corridor — a roughly 11,500-square-kilometre stretch that alone shelters about a quarter of Nepal’s entire red panda population.
Status: Endangered, the IUCN upgraded its status from “threatened” to “endangered” in 2015. Earlier the species lost roughly half of its wild population in 2 decades.

The red panda conservation acts as an “umbrella” work. Its protection extends to the entire web of biodiversity sharing its forest. Save the red panda’s habitat, and you save the water catchments, medicinal plants, and dozens of co-existing species that depend on the same intact bamboo-broadleaf forest belt, the same forests that feed Nepal’s rivers and, downstream, its agriculture.
Nepal’s once-contiguous red panda forests have been broken into roughly 400 small, disconnected patches by land degradation, infrastructure development, and unsustainable grazing. Beyond habitat loss, the animal faces a grimmer modern threat: it has become a target of the illegal wildlife trade, sought after as an exotic black-market pet. Mongrel dogs have become the new threat to the red pandas in recent years. So far Nepal got the delivery mechanism right, coordinated with the local people, paid them and worked on the trust-based stewardship. That’s arguably the more solvable half of the problem, but the other half is still missing, which is the state ownership of the conservation efforts.

The elusive Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens), endangered guardian of the misty Himalayan forests and umbrella for a rich mountain ecosystem.
