Serum Institute to make 100 million doses of Covishield every month Starting next year, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, Serum Institute of India, is planning to make up to 100 million doses of AstraZeneca-Oxford’s COVID-19 vaccine each month, Named Covishield, the vaccine is undergoing phase 3 trials in India, and the company has already applied for emergency use authorization in the country, Fifty million doses of the vaccine have been made so far. India will have first priority to Covishield, followed by the COVAX countries, which are mainly in Africa. The company will also manufacture Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine. GAVI and the Gates Foundation have funded the company to deliver up to 200 million doses, at $3 per dose, of both vaccines, which are meant for India and other low-and middle-income countries. The company currently has capacity to produce 1500 million doses of vaccines annually, and is now planning to expand it to 2500 million by the end of next year.
