Women’s Health and Plastic Surgery

Words by Dr Niran Maharjan

Plastic surgery isn’t just about appearance; it’s a remedy for stress and societal pressures, offering lasting solutions beyond superficial beauty concerns.

Plastic surgery when being uttered or discussed, the word Women comes in the talk because it’s the field often associated with creating beauty or that is what every common man thinks of. It indeed deals primarily with aesthetics, so when the talk is on cosmesis, women are definitely visualized more than the men as they are symbolized with beauty. One thinks of beauty as skin deep. It is related to body appearance, thus women in comparison to men suffer more from social anxiety, prejudice and inequality based on their appearance. This directly never causes any illness but the psycho-social problem being induced remains unnoticed until and unless they land up in the counselling room of a psychiatrist. And not everyone is lucky enough to get a good counsellor especially in a country like Nepal, where seeking help for mental health is still in its infancy.

Breaking the silence on sex-related issues is essential. Concealing health problems only leads to more significant challenges. Awareness can prevent and treat conditions often kept hidden.

Women who are experts in multi-tasking in one hand are the weakest in another hand as they do not get the psycho-social support they actually need. Thus, the standards that have been set in their society very often become their reality and in order to meet or maintain that level, they start to run after that. And with this, there is a rise in the stress level. Stress is the worst factor as it accelerates the ageing process of the body and its organs. The most visible being the skin and that too of the face. The ageing skin with the marked wrinkling and lack of luster becomes more problematic. There are different remedies for such problems too but either it’s expensive or one has to keep on repeating the procedure multiple times. And the stress and depression led by it is left to pile up until it severely damages the daily routine. Plastic surgery certainly stands as a way to tackle the signs of ageing. But again in order to manage the underlying stress, one might need to see a psychiatrist, which is again hindered in our society because it’s the societal norm where consulting the psychiatrist means you have some kind of mental illness. Medical solutions like filler injection and botox along with various topically applicable creams can restore the facial fullness and omit the wrinkles while bringing the glow but they last for some period only and instead the surgical procedures like blepharoplasty to correct the eyelids, browlift to correct the eyebrow and forehead, rhinoplasty to correct the nose, otoplasty to correct the ear, facelift to correct the sagging face, dimpleplasty to create the dimple and similar minute procedures taken in the face can restore or create the youthfulness permanently. This will somehow decrease the stress level as the problem has been solved but the depression that has rooted is left untreated which in future might cause problems.

Burn injuries during kitchen chores are a hidden danger. Simple precautions and awareness can prevent these injuries, ensuring the well-being of women, especially in low socioeconomic settings.

Even in the 21st century, women are still supposed to remain silent and calm. Time has marched but our mentality and thoughts have not evolved. Thus, talking freely about sex and sex related topics is still not practiced which hinders the resolution of generation old problems. Due to the lack of knowledge and the taboo of not talking freely, women still keep hiding the sex related problem until it severely affects their health. Uterine prolapse, Uro-vaginal benign disease and breast lumps that could have been prevented or treated in early phase are kept hidden leading to disastrous health status. Malignancy of breast and utero-vaginal region are too left undiscovered until they become untreatable. However, in recent days, the trend seems to be changing as they are gaining knowledge in sex-related topics and they feel less reluctant to narrate their problem. But the problem still persists at large because after treatment gets completed, they feel reluctant to share their experience which if done could have helped to spread awareness in the friends and family circle.

Even today, women are the ones who are left with the house-hold chores and taking care of the kitchen. During cooking, there are incidents of burn injuries either by the hot utensils, hot liquids or even the fire itself. If certain circumstances could be maintained, then most of these injuries could be prevented and even after that it occurred, these could have been managed in a home-based manner or treated completely in hospital set-up. Most of these injuries are small in size thus are left unnoticed and get healed with scarring. Women in low socioeconomic status wear the cheap saree and during the winter season they sit around the open fire for the warmth it provides. During this act, they are the ones who get victimized from the burn injuries as their shawl or saree easily catches fire.

Early intervention is key. Whether it’s plastic surgery or seeking help from other medical professionals, taking that small step can significantly impact women’s overall health and beauty.

This article is not enough to depict all the problems and its solution that today’s women are facing but the main intention is to highlight the fact that if a small step is taken to seek for the problems in its initial stage, most of the problems have a cure. Let us all develop the habit of seeking help when needed whether it be from a plastic surgeon or from other medical fraternity. So, my advice to all the women in this era is to take a small step forward and take your health and beauty in your own hands for your own benefit.
