The color of festival has arrived. Holi is unequivocally the most vibrant and colorful festival that deserves to be enjoyed and celebrated. However, the harmful chemical and colors used during the celebration may cause potential damage to your skin, hair and nail. This synthetic pigments and dyes contains hazardous compounds like mercury, silica, lead, etc. that causes allergic contact dermatitis, irritant dermatitis, burns, acne flare ups, eye infections and rarely carcinogenic effects on skin. The chemicals in the colors can strip the skin of its natural oil, leading to dryness, flakiness, and dehydration especially in individuals with sensitive skin. Prolonged exposure to Holi colors can cause pigmentation problems such as dark spots, uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. Similarly, the color can stick to the hair and nail causing dryness, frizzy, brittleness, breakage, lusterless and even hair and nail loss in severe cases. Excessive and harsh use of colors can sometimes leads to irreversible damage to the skin so it is very essential to protect your skin and take precautions before and after Holi.
As a dermatologist here I would like to recommend few skincare tips to prevent these effects:
- Pre Holi Skincare: Moisturize your skin and oil your hair adequately before playing Holi to create a barrier between your skin and the colors. Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher at least 30 mins before going out in the sun.
- Cover-Up: Wear long sleeve shirts, pants and a hat to minimize skin exposure to colors. This helps prevent direct contact with harsh chemicals present in synthetic colors. Use protective sunglasses to prevent eye contact to colors.
- Use Natural colors: Opt for organic or natural colors as they are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions compared to synthetic ones.
- Protective Barrier: Before playing Holi, apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly to areas prone to color staining such as nails, cuticles, areas around lips and eyes.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from within. Dehydration can worsen skin reactions to colors and increase skin sensitivity.
- Post Holi Skincare: Use a mild cleanser to wash off the colors from your skin and clarifying shampoo to rinse color from hair. Avoid using harsh soap, rubbing or scrubbing, as it can strip away natural oils and irritate the skin. Apply a hydrating moisturizer after cleansing to help repair any damage and restore moisture balance. If you experience any skin irritation or allergic reaction post Holi, such as itching, redness, rash or swelling immediately consult a dermatologist for appropriate treatment.
Holi is a time of joy, love and renewal. By being mindful of the products we use and following these skincare tips, one can enjoy the vibrant essence of Holi while keeping the skin healthy and protected.
