Scientists are exploring whether vaccination in necessary for people who’ve already been infected with SARS-CoV-2 infection. While some recommend that they still get a single dose of vaccine, a new study from the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio has found that people who’ve already had COVID-19 may not require vaccination. They found almost no cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection among 52,238 healthcare workers who had either: previously contracted the virus and were unvaccinated; previously contracted the virus and were vaccinated; or never contracted the virus and were vaccinated. The findings show that vaccination lowers the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection among uninfected people, but not among those who have already had it, who seem to have similar immunity as those who were fully vaccinated. However, since more research is needed to determine how long immunity lasts after infection, some doctors recommend that previously infected people still get one dose. Similarly, an Israeli study has concluded that re-infection was as low in previously ill people as it was with those who had been fully vaccinated.
