Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP), also known as micro tattooing, is an advanced concealing technique with almost-permanent results in patients with scalp visibility and donor area insufficiency. It is an artistic procedure where natural, non-toxic inks are used to create a series of tiny dots over the scalp, in between the hairs or the bald area, to give look of tiny hairs.
The procedure is non-invasive and cost-effective. The results are immediate, realistic, and hassle-free. This method can restore even a completely bald head to look like a full head of well-groomed hair. It is suitable for all types and stages of hair-loss, on all ages, colors, and skin type.
The SMP process
SMP is a highly sophisticated medical tattoo process whereby a dye is inserted into the skin using one or more needles. The needles require depth control to limit where the tattoo dye is placed. The dye can passively extend beyond the confines of the needle point where it is placed. SMP looks amazingly simple, and in concept it is simple, but the techniques that were developed must be customized for each patient, as the skin in each patient differs with regard to how the scalp reacts and holds on to the dye. There are many variables in performing SMP that makes this process more of an art form than a science. The SMP process is a labor-intensive process and could take multiple sessions.
Indications:
1. Scalp scars from scarring alopecias.
2. People with autoimmune diseases, such as refractory alopecia areata or alopecia totalis.
3. Women who are balding or thinning who are not responsive to minoxidil or other medical treatments and do not qualify for hair transplantation.
4. Neurosurgery scars and scars from head trauma, surgeries, and/or hair restoration procedures.
5. Chemotherapy patients who do not grow back significant amounts of their hair after treatment.
6. Deformities in hair restoration patients resulting from unplanned progressive hair loss in men whose hair transplants have failed to achieve the amount of “fullness” they expected.
7. People with wide or obvious scars from donor strip harvesting techniques.
8. People who dislike using topical concealers or wigs.
SMP can also be an alternative to hair restoration surgery in some male patients who do not want to have a surgical procedure to treat their balding, or the female patient who is thinning and may decide to use SMP as a permanent concealer.
Key points:
• SMP is a medical tattoo application for balding or thinning hair.
• SMP is very effective for the treatment of scalp scars of almost any cause.
• SMP offers a good nonsurgical alternative treatment for hair and scalp deformities.
• One of the greatest benefits of scalp micropigmentation is that it requires little to no continued maintenance and carries no strict lifestyle restrictions.
