As we observe World Health Day today, it’s crucial for all of us to grasp the vital significance of preserving and safeguarding the fundamental human right to health. Under the theme ‘My health, my right’, this year’s commemoration calls for global solidarity in ensuring equitable access to essential health services, education, and information.
Across the globe, numerous challenges threaten the realization of this very fundamental human right. Diseases, natural disasters, and conflicts continue to wreak havoc, resulting in immense suffering and loss of life. Moreover, the pervasive impact of the climate crisis, exacerbated by the burning of fossil fuels, poses a significant threat to public health by compromising the air we breathe and perpetuating environmental degradation in the name of development. Despite the recognition of health as a human right in the constitutions of over 140 countries, the implementation of laws guaranteeing universal access to healthcare remains inadequate. Shockingly, more than half of the world’s population lacks access to essential health services, as highlighted by the WHO Council on the Economics of Health for All.
In Nepal, the pursuit of universal health coverage faces unique challenges stemming from its diverse geography, socio-economic disparities, and historical infrastructure limitations. Despite progress in healthcare access in urban centers, many remote and marginalized communities continue to experience barriers to essential services. The rugged terrain often impedes the delivery of healthcare, leaving remote villages underserved and isolated. Additionally, socio-economic factors such as poverty, inadequate education, and cultural beliefs further exacerbate the health disparities. Addressing these challenges requires targeted interventions aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure, enhancing health education initiatives, and empowering local communities to participate in health decision-making processes. Yes, Nepal has made strides in healthcare accessibility through the implementation of a government-backed healthcare insurance scheme. While this initiative aimed to alleviate financial burdens and expand healthcare coverage, it has faced challenges in terms of sustainability and efficiency. The program’s high administrative costs and limited impact on improving health outcomes underscore the need for comprehensive reforms in healthcare financing and service delivery. Despite these hurdles, the healthcare insurance scheme remains a crucial component of Nepal’s efforts to achieve universal health coverage. However, concerted efforts are required to address its shortcomings and ensure that resources are effectively allocated to maximize the program’s impact, particularly for those in remote and underserved areas. It is only by prioritizing inclusivity and equity in healthcare delivery, Nepal can move closer towards achieving the vision of health for all its citizens.
The theme ‘My health, my right’ tries to address these systemic disparities and injustices. It advocates for the holistic well-being of individuals, emphasizing not only access to healthcare but also the broader determinants of health such as safe drinking water, clean air, adequate nutrition, and suitable living and working conditions. It is necessary to combat the discrimination in healthcare delivery and ensure inclusivity for marginalized populations. It underscores the need for concerted efforts to dismantle barriers to healthcare access based on socio-economic status, gender, ethnicity, or geographical location. Moving forward, it is incumbent upon governments, policymakers, healthcare providers, and civil society to uphold the right to health for all individuals, irrespective of their background or circumstances. By prioritizing investments in healthcare infrastructure, promoting health education, and fostering multi sectoral collaborations, we can work towards building a healthier and more equitable world for future generations.
As we mark World Health Day 2024, let us reaffirm our commitment to realizing the vision of health for all. Let us envision a future where every individual can assert their right to health with confidence and dignity.
